Radio engineering devices and systems chair

The chair was created in 1945 after division of the receiving-sending devices chair on two: radio-receiving and radio-transmitting devices (now, the chair of radio engineering devices and systems) (REDS).

Well known scientific, corresponding member of Academy of Sciences USSR, professor Simeon Isaakovich Tetelbaum was the first chair head.http://rtps.kpi.ua/img/history/image002.jpg After his death in 1958 the chair was headed by its pupil professor Vadim Pavlovich Taranenko, since 1998 the chair is headed by the professor Pravda V.I..

The chair is main on the bachelors, experts and masters training in the area of «Radio engineering» and provides teaching of 34 subject matters in the area of «Radio engineering» and «Radio-electronic devices». The principal objective of the curriculum of radio engineering bachelors preparation is the formation of system knowledge on signals generation, their gains, transmission on a radio channel and detection of the transmittable information. Necessity of an effective utilization of a spectral resource of the radio unit at the expense of magnification of information transmission rate and struggle against noises, the adaptive methods of multiplexing and information detection is conceptually underlined.

The following disciplines: «Electronics component basis», «Up-to date electronics element basis», «Power supplies of radio-electronic equipment», «Bases of statistical radio engineering», «Bases of the theory of information transfer», «Generation and formation of signals» are taught on chair.

Radio engineering bachelor training provides learning of algorithms, formation and digital signal processing methods, learning of hardware-software means: programmed logical integrated circuits, signal processors, the general-purpose processors, methods of their adjustment and embedding in systems and complexes. To this area of radio engineering bachelor training within the limits of the curriculum two disciplines «Digital devices» and «Digital signal processing» are devoted.
The modern radio engineering uses frequencies of ten gigahertz, therefore the bachelor training is impossible without microwaves learning. The disciplines «Microwave electronic and quantum devices» and « Microwave and optics region devices» are there for added.

The many disciplines of the curriculum of the radio engineering bachelor training are devoted to questions of programming, modeling and optimization of radio-electronic equipment with application of modern CAD: «Computer engineering and programming», «Electronics computer design and modeling bases», «Optimization of radio engineering devices design».

The task of radio engineering bachelor training is the provision to it of a knowledge on a radio systems and complexes current state and disciplines «Radio-electronic systems», «Television bases», «Systems and television networks», «Broadcasting», «Information technologies», «Information radio systems», «Networks and technologies of a radio access» learning.

The modern educational laboratories for radar and radio navigation modeling are created.
On the basis of the chair the scientifically-methodical subcommittee of ministry of education of Ukraine in the area of «Radio engineering» works, it is headed by chair manager prof. Pravda V.I. and defines the content and perspective of experts training in the area of «Radio engineering» in Ukraine. The associate professors Dmitruk V.A. and Djachenko S.M. are members of subcommittee of ministry of education of Ukraine, which defines educational programs.
The chair is widely known for the research and development operation in the field of microwave electronics engineering. Researches have been begun in the fifties last century at the decision of tasks on a problem of transmission of the electric power by means of radio waves. Then in cooperation with institute of electrical technology of the Academy of Sciences creation of microwave powerful generators of the continuous action began. The first such generator was the powerful double-cavity transient-time klystron created in 1949. The klystron had output power of 1.5 kW in a continuous mode and worked on wavelength nearby 10 cm. For the first time in the world the powerful klystron with electron beam electrostatic focusing and electrons recuperation in the field of a collector has been created.
In 1953 - 1956 for the first time powerful isochronous generators of backward wave have been created. Their power was 2-3 times greater than power of existing then microwave electron devices. For increase of efficiency of interaction of electrons with a field slow wave circuits in the form of a chain of resonators with coupling slots and with variable slowness factor the isochronous systems have been made. Generators powers were units of kilowatts in a continuous mode in short wave parts of CM-band.

In 1954 - 1957 the theory has been developed and the microwave experimental generators of new type were designed, they are working on a principle of the durable interaction of electrons with unmoderated electromagnetic waves. In 1957 the experimental backward wave generator of this type has been made first-ever.
In 1959 research in development and creation of powerful traveling wave tubes (TWT) in a centimetric wave’s band began. Fundamental works have been performed on TWT of type “O” theory and in 1962 the first in the USSR powerful continuous action TWT has been created. The tube’s power of some kilowatts was in short wave parts of a centimetric, it’s band width of gain was of 20 %. On the basis of this TWT radar systems and radio counteraction systems have been created.

For development and implementation in a batch production powerful TWT Taranenko V. P and employees of chair Pravda V.I., Komarchuk A. R, Derenovsky M. V, Lizhdvoju K.J., Dyachenko S.М, Shevchenko V.I. have been awarded to the State Prize of Ukraine.
These years on chair the microwave electron devices scientific school was generated. As a result of research of devices on the basis of interaction of electrons with unmoderated wave in 1970 gyromagnetic klystron has been created , which, working in a millimeter band, had power in unit of kilowatts at performance coefficient to 40 % with gain amount not less than 30 дБ.
On the basis of chair three All-Union USSR microwave electronics engineering conferences have been led. Actually at the chair the journal “News of high schools. Radio electronics” has been created. The journal has a high world rating and is reprinted in the USA.
Having the considerable achievements in the field of electronic optics, the chair fulfilled a series of research and development and designer operations on creation precision electron-optical systems for a data recording on the carriers, allowing its further optical handling.
Development and creation of system of optical information processing of multi-channel linear hydro acoustic antennas on the basis of the spatio-temporal modulator with the magneto-optical screen electron beam addressing became logical end of these operations.

The system of space control of lasers of the big capacity has been created. On these subjects Dmitruk V. A, Lysak V. V, Mihajlenko M.V. have defended candidate’s theses.

In 1975 the chair successfully began research in the field of solid-state electronics.
Methods of microwave generators and amplifiers computer design on avalanche-transit diodes, including the operations connected to increase of power of generators, their performance coefficient (efficiency), stability are developed, generators on open resonators are created.
On the basis of these works Kotserzhinsky B. A. and Machuskij E.A. have defended doctor’s theses.

For development and creation of solid-state generators and amplifiers of a millimetric band in 1989 Taranenko V.P., Pravda V.I., Omeljanenko M. Ju, Tkachenko L. А, Tureeva O. V, Machuskij E. A were awarded to the award of Ministerial council of the USSR. On the basis of these works industrial samples of radio-relay stations in millimetric wave band are developed.

In 1995 the interbranch laboratory of methods and means of criminalistics researches was organized on chair (manager Levyj S.V.).
http://rtps.kpi.ua/img/history/image022.jpgIt together with appropriate structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the State Security Service is engaged in development and implementation of equipment for к criminalistics researches. The main areas of laboratory are criminalistics magnetic recording research; the analysis of language of the person and its identification; ballistic researches; technical expert appraisal of documents and identification of numbers of aggregates of motor transport. Experimental sets: the hardware-software complex for two-dimensional scanning of the documents made and also protected by magnetic color, the complex for nondestructive research of surfaces and the environments (including for detection of a fake of numbers of motor transport) have been developed and made .These developed complexes are implemented more than in 20 countries of the world.

For years of the existence the chair prepared 5 doctors and more than 50 candidates of science. Employees of chair were deans of radio engineering faculty: the honored worker of a science of Ukraine the professor Taranenko V. P. from 1974 to 1988, the honored worker of formation of Ukraine the professor Pravda V.I. from 1989 to 2003.
Employees of chair write monographies, textbooks, hundreds scientific articles. For the manual for high schools “Television Basis” associate professor Dombrugov R. M. has been awarded to the State award of Ukraine. The encyclopedic reference manual “Radio engineering”, manuals “Telecommunication systems” and “Electrodynamics and radio propagation” are published during the last years.
